Welcome to 2025!

As a child of the ’80s, I can’t help but feel like we’re living in the backdrop of a futuristic movie. Sure, flying cars and real hoverboards haven’t quite become the norm—but here we are, a quarter of the way into this century, witnessing remarkable advancements in nearly every field. It’s an amazing time to be alive and there remains real pain and suffering. Inequality and injustice persist, instability and uncertainty abound. What the future holds, none of us can truly say. But praise God—we know the One who not only knows the future but holds it securely in His hands. As I ponder all of this I am moved to pray for you and our church as we start this New Year. I pray…

A New Year’s Prayer (Modernized in Eugene Peterson’s Style)

May God shape your year into something beautiful—not by keeping you safe from every sorrow and struggle,

but by giving you the strength to face it head-on.

Not by clearing every obstacle,

but by steadying your feet for the climb.

Not by taking away life’s tough moments,

but by replacing your fear with His unshakable presence.

Not by offering endless sunshine,

but by teaching you to find His light even in the shadows.

Not by filling every moment with comfort,

but by showing you where you’re needed most—where people are hurting,

and by giving you the restless love to step in and make a difference.

May His love steady you,

His peace surround you,

His hope lift you,

and His joy sustain you

as you step into the year ahead.

Amen.

May your 2025 bring God great glory!
